[Posting the following for Grandma Read...]
Dear family,
This is my first entry for the blog Karen J. created. I hope I can get this to go where it's supposed to go. I've enjoyed reading the entries on the blog and seeing the pictures. What a great way to share with each other what's going on in our lives.
I thought our grandchildren would want to know about Grandpa's health issues. We went to the doctor today to learn the results of a chest CT-scan and blood tests Grandpa received during the last few weeks. The blood tests show that he has glucose intolerance, which means he doesn't have diabetes, but sort of a pre-diabetes. The doctor says he should watch his diet and cut down on sweets. So, we're going to have to change our habits around here! It's not going to be easy!
Actually, somewhat more serious is the result of his CT -scan. The doctor says he has pulmonary fibrosis. The good news is that it hasn't progressed very far, but it explains his shortness of breath. The way I understand the condition is that scar tissue builds up in the lungs. The little sacs in the lungs become fibrous and do not function well, thus cutting down on the capacity of the lungs to do their job. The doctor explained that after years of study, they do not know the causes, which seem to be various, although they do have some suspicions -- like smoking, for example. They also do not have a cure. Of course they're working on it, and some new drugs are in the works and may be promising. If you want to learn more, you can Google pulmonary fibrosis. I learned a few things from doing that.
On Friday, we are to call and make an appointment with a pulmonary specialist. Grandpa will also have some more tests. Then, he will have an MRI on March 17 and see a neurologist for the results.
Grandpa does not seem very upset about all this. In fact, when he learned he had glucose intolerance, he quipped, "I didn't think I had any intolerance at all!" Later he said, "Maybe I should stop seeing the doctors and just stay like I am. I actually feel pretty well." I want him to continue, though, so we can keep him around as long as possible. I'll keep you posted.
Love to all,
Grandma
